How to Become a Leader in the Pharmaceutical Industry

How to become a thought leader

A thought leader is someone critical to your success in medical affairs. But they’re avenues that you can also become a thought leader yourself. A thought leader inspires innovation and is an influencer to others.

It is essential to understand how someone became a thought leader, and your career in the industry needs to know how you become a thought leader yourself. Becoming a thought leader can allow you to have gravitas and pull within your company by negotiating promotions and budgets for your project. This article will uncover four critical steps to becoming a successful thought leader.

Pick your battlegrounds

Thought leaders can focus and communicate in a specific area to establish themselves as specialists. You want to be known as the go-to person to establish credibility in your field. Don’t attempt to become a thought leader in all parts of your area because you will become a jack of trades but a master of none.

It is better to go deep and focus on a few narrow areas and amplify your voice if you want to have the most significant influence.

Keep your ear to the ground.

As a thought leader, you must understand what is happening daily and what challenges both patients and clinicians face. This enables you to give valuable yet timely advice that people will notice.

The day-to-day business agenda can get in the way of your reality and understanding of the real world. Participating in diversity and inclusion, charity and networking incentives is beneficial as these may pay dividends in the long term. Demonstrating that you are omnipresent at all events builds your credibility as a thought leader and a trusted partner

Never stop learning

The pharmaceutical industry is one of the fastest-evolving industries out there. With AI being used in diagnostics and new publications coming out each month, you must stay on top of common trends in treatment and regulations.

Thought leaders study one to two hours a week, reading their peers' latest journal publications and articles. They’re consistently looking for educational and developmental opportunities to improve their writing, presentation and communication skills.

Amplification

Amplification of your presence is the final step to becoming a thought leader. It requires building an authentic presence both online and face-to-face. Firstly online via social media business platforms such as LinkedIn, you can comment on interesting posts and share your ideas on relevant topics to engage with your network. Secondly, attend as many in-person networking events as you can get around to, and sacrifice your evenings and weekends to build this presence, as the more people you have in your network, the more potential you have to become an influencer

Finally, working with current thought leaders to collaborate with them, co-authoring for publications or working with digital thought leaders can increase your reach as you increase your profile to their audience.

Conclusion

Becoming a thought leader starts with small actions you can take today. I’ve noticed that my efforts have helped me become recognised as a peer to top key opinion leaders and get their respect, and once you have their care, you have the power to influence them.
